Choose the right time: Wait until your cat is calm and relaxed, perhaps after a nap or a meal. Avoid trying to groom them when they're playful or agitated.
Start slowly: Let your cat sniff and inspect the brush first. Begin by brushing their favourite spots, like their back or under their chin, for just a few minutes.
Use short strokes: Always brush in the direction of hair growth. Use short, gentle strokes to avoid pulling on their fur.
Offer treats: Create a positive association with grooming by offering your cat a treat before and after each session.
Keep it brief: For cats who are new to brushing, keep sessions short – just five to ten minutes at a time. You can gradually increase the duration as they become more comfortable.
Be patient: Never force your cat to be groomed. If they show signs of stress or discomfort, stop and try again another day. Breaking the grooming routine into smaller parts, such as brushing one day and clipping their claws another, can also help.
